To Our Audience,

We've had a beautiful start to the 2009-2010 Season here at SLAC. I was enthralled by Harold Pinter's THE CARETAKER soon after I arrived in September, and subsequently captivated last month by the Anne Cullimore Decker's brilliant Maria Callas in our revival of MASTER CLASS. As I draw the curtains on my first three months here, I've been reflecting on earliest memories of theatre, when the passion for it took hold.

For me, a small-town-New Jersey boy, it was taking the bus into New York City to catch a matinee, soaking in live performance, that endangered species often nudged aside by our computer age.

What about you? Was there a moment you fell in love with theatre — as a child, or as an adult maybe — some magical experience that ignited the spark?

Our goal with our December production, a theatrical adaptation of P.D. Eastman's classic book GO, DOG. GO!, is to give children that early visceral, first-hand experience of exceptional live theatre, perhaps even to plant the seed of a lifelong passion. To that end, we've offered 9 free performances to local Title 1 underserved elementary schools — over 1,200 students. And we're asking for your help to make it possible.

A $12 donation would enable one student to attend a free performance of GO, DOG. GO!.  $24 would support two student visitors. And so on. Anything you can give will help SLAC give the gift of smart, engaging, joyous theatre to kids this season.

We believe theatre is for everyone, and that the power of live theatre — especially combined with the imagination of a child — is endless. I am honored to see the birth of a new tradition at SLAC: intelligent, professionally-produced theatre for youth.

From all of us, thank you for your support of and involvement with SLAC, and here's to a happy holiday season. We look forward to seeing you at the theatre.

Warm regards ~
