TOO MUCH MEMORY by Keith Reddin and Meg Gibson, second week of performance by actor Austin Archer

I never really know what I'm supposed to write in these things! I debated waxing on for pages about politics or things that really grind my gears and make me want to get out and protest, but then I read Nicki's blog and realized I had been beaten to the punch on that idea. Then I thought about writing a page worth of knock-knock jokes that have tie-ins to Greek theater, but the major problem there is I simply don't know any Greek knock-knock jokes and I am not clever enough to come up with any on the spot (Where's Lane Richins when you need him?). So instead I think I've decided to write about a day in the process for this show. Not any particular day, just a hypothetical situation that could have occurred on any given day with the actors and director in question. However, for your reading enjoyment, and to go along with SLAC's unending focus and appreciation of new scripts I will be writing from here on out in script form; enjoy!

(Lights up on NICKI, AUSTIN, MEG, and SARAH rehearsing the first Haemon and Antigone scene. MEG sips tea from a small, and elegant thermos. SARAH sits in the front row of the house taking notes)

AUSTIN:
I just don't feel like I'm getting that initial....

MEG:
What?

AUSTIN:
I don't know...

MEG:
What? Tell me.

AUSTIN:
I don't think I know just what I'm supposed to be coming in with at the top of the scene. I'm not sure if I know how upset I'm supposed to be or... I don't know.

NICKI:
There are just so many conflicting emotions to play in this scene.

AUSTIN:
Totally!

MEG:
(stepping into the acting space)
It's true there are.
It's not easy,
and I didn't say it would be.
This is difficult work.
It's difficult beat work...
it's difficult because of the emotional
contrast in color
that it presents to
the rest of the show.
It's difficult because
you're both so young
and the stakes get so high.

NICKI:
I feel like I just want to go with him!

MEG:
But you can't.

NICKI:
Ahh! I know! (she laughs in giddy frustration) but it's like he just comes in here and says all of this amazingly perfect shit and then I'm supposed to just... God, push him away?!

MEG:
Yes.
But you can find the moments
when what he's saying
just floors you,
like a zen archer
leaving you
helpless and wounded
after just one shot.
And even then,
even after he's struck you
at the very core of your
solar plexus,
leaving you breathless and enchanted,
even then you have to find a way
to tell him
what you need to tell him.
(beat)
Yeah?

(Pause)

NICKI:
Yeah.

MEG:
(turning to AUSTIN)
And for you, H,
There is an obsession to it.
You have to be
obsessed!
Feel that body electric draw
that she gives you
whenever you look at her.
You have to be
so driven by
your love for her,
You should be able
to feel it burn
inside of your chest
from the moment you see her.
Remember what it felt like
to touch her,
to be with her.
She is your world!
And that's all there is to it really.

AUSTIN:
Ok.

MEG:
You sure?

AUSTIN:
Yes, that all makes sense I just have to... you know, do it.

MEG:
From the top?

AUSTIN and NICKI:
Yes.

SARAH:
(To MEG)
We only have time to run it once more, because the whole cast is arriving after we rehearse this scene and if we don't get at least one good game of "koosh" in they'll all be pissed. (Beat) Well maybe not Morgan, but I know I'll definitely hear about it from Lane.

(Lights out.)
